Joe Namath’s Super Bowl III Victory

Dean Britton is a longtime New York City real estate entrepreneur who focuses on ground lease arrangements with AIA. A New York Jets fan, Dean Britton follows in the footsteps of his father, who was a big Joe Namath fan. The legendary quarterback had a formative moment in Super Bowl III, when the Jets took on the Baltimore Colts.

Held in Miami’s Orange Bowl on January 12, 1969, the game started with the Jets, representing the American Football League (AFL), an 18-point underdog against the National Football League Colts (it was not until a year later that the NFL and AFL merged). Arriving in Miami in a turquoise Cadillac before the game, “Broadway Joe” brazenly proclaimed that his team would wind up victorious, adding “I guarantee it.”

Beleaguered by persistent knee issues, Namath entered the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl against the Colts facing a seemingly insurmountable 16-0 deficit. What came next is still one of the greatest comebacks ever, with Namath threading the needle to connect on 17 of 28 passes and score 17 points for the victory.

With this game redefining NFL celebrity culture, Namath noted in a jubilant locker room that the team had overcome critics who had “predicted a 42-13 loss.” Or as John Dockery, a rookie safety, described it, “He not only made me believe – he made us all believe.”
