In a late 2022 interview, Austrian billionaire driver and Mercedes motorsport executive Toto Wolff explored the qualities that make his British counterpart a potent force in F1 racing. With Hamilton having just gone through his first winless season ever, Wolff took the blame. He noted that Mercedes had not given Hamilton a “tool capable of winning,” as the race car was unpredictable and unstable.
Wolff also described the seven-time world champion as having developed true leadership qualities, as he is able to lift up and motivate team members when they fall short. In many ways Hamilton has transcended the role of driver, like other veteran athletes such as Tom Brady and Michael Schumacher, and become a team manager. Having been with Mercedes for a full decade, he is a vital and “emotional part of the team.” Summing up a mixed year of Mercedes racing, Wolff accented the positive, referencing teammate George Russell’s convincing victory in Brazil.
