Chess is perhaps one of the oldest board games ever. Over its 1500 years of history, many people have attempted to conquer or master the game. However, as Siegbert Tarrasch, one of the original five grandmasters, said, chess only produces masters; no one can master it.
Nonetheless, it is still relevant to recognize some of the best chess players ever. One of them is grandmaster Garry Kasparov, the 13th global champion and one of the longest holders of the title (15 years). Kasparov is a Soviet union born player who dominated the chess world for 20 years, holding the number one title for that long. He reached his peak Fide rating in March of 2000 at 2856.
Another player worth mentioning is the Norwegian-born grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. Many say he is the best person ever to play chess. Carlsen is the youngest player ever to have an over 2800 Fide rating and has been ranked number one since 2011. He achieved his peak rating in April of 2014 at 2889, 33 points higher than Kasparov’s.
